The Harsh Light

The Brighter the Better

A recent article that was published in “The Providence Journal” (Rhode Island) reported that public schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia are reminding parents that their children can take advantage of many educational games on Thinkfinity.org, a website sponsored by the Verizon Foundation. These brain-games were designed to help children refresh their skills in language, math and science — particularly during the holidays when students will be away from school on break. One parent noted that the telecommunications giant is well known for its support of public education. “I’m very glad that Verizon is one of the principal Internet service providers in my area” he was quoted as saying.

The article stated that students experience a retention loss when they don’t engage in thought provoking activities while on vacation. “Science and math are the fundamentals — but these subjects many times cause anxiety,” said Keith Fulton, Vice President of Governmental Affairs for Verizon Internet in Virginia. Fulton said the Thinkfinity website provides videos, audio recordings and games designed for a wide variety of grade levels. Students will find the website fun and non-stressful. Verizon employees have also collected over $9,000 in Virginia that they used to purchase supplies they then donated to fifteen different schools & non-profit organizations throughout the state.
